Construction Starts On Qinghai-Tibet Power Grid

Wednesday, Aug 04, 2010

Construction work has commenced on a power interconnection project that will go across the Tibetan Plateau and is intended to solve the problem of power shortages in Tibet.

The construction of the world's longest high-altitude power transmission line involves a total investment of CNY13.92 billion and runs for a total length of 1,774 kilometers.

The State Grid Corporation of China, the nation's largest power supplier, has taken charge of this project because of its complexity and the requirement to follow strict rules to protect the sensitive environment in the plateau area.

The average height above sea-level of the transmission line is 4,650 meters and the project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2012.
