Southern California Edison Upgrades Duarte Distribution Substation to Enhance Reliability in the Region

Wednesday, Sep 08, 2010

To ensure continued reliable electric service, Southern California Edison (SCE) invested more than $4 million to upgrade its distribution network by adding a new circuit that serves the city of Duarte and portions of Monrovia.

The recently completed upgrades will ensure SCE will meet existing and anticipated electrical demand in Duarte and Monrovia and will contribute to reliable service.

The new circuit will provide load relief and improved switching capabilities to the city of Duarte. The upgrades include the installation of 23 underground structures, two miles of underground cable, and several miles of new and reconditioned overhead lines.

Elisa Clifford, SCE’s Local Public Affairs regional manager for Duarte and Monrovia, said SCE recognizes its responsibility to maintain service reliability and to expand and improve its local distribution grid that serves its customers.

“Installation of this new distribution equipment will help minimize the likelihood of unanticipated outages in Duarte,” Clifford said.

The company also is installing automated monitoring equipment to expedite service to customers in the area.

During the next five years, SCE will invest $10 billion to strengthen its systemwide distribution grid to ensure the utility’s customers continue to receive affordable, reliable power.
